Creating the facility, despite the interest, hasn’t come without risk.

Voskoboinikov has put hundreds of thousands towards the project, with large capital investments up front to cover purchases like professional competition grade floors from Tomko, the creation of amenity and socializing areas, and unique for a space of its size, sound proofing before operations begin.

“The amount of money you spend on this thing, and this is basically what people want, this is your business right here. So, you want to make sure it’s as perfect as you can get, and that’s what we did,” he said.

Andy Strasser, President of Merlin Integrated Solutions, which has been installing the soundproofing on the roof, said the amount of fabric needed for the roof overwhelmed their supplier’s factory.

That work is being done not to make the entire court space free from sound, but so that when players are hitting balls on one end of the building, it means people can have a normal conversation on the other.

Being a preferred community partner means looking out for your neighbors. Achieving this isn’t always simple as one of the biggest challenges many operations face is excess noise which can impact overall relations with your valued neighbors. For our client, taking that risk was not an option. When they identified noise concerns with their loading dock – transportation noise issues with shipments being received all hours of the day coupled with the fact that a multi-story residential development was less than 100 m away, our customer was proactive in finding a solution. Merlin was contacted to provide a large sound barrier to block noise from the loading dock. In addition, absorptive panels were added to the exterior building façade and colours were custom powder coated to match the building owners branding. These customized solutions significantly reduced the excess noise going into the community, further creating goodwill and solidified our customer’s positioning as a preferred community partner. That’s the big impact low noise can deliver.

Working with a leading industrial turbine overhaul, repair and maintenance specialist, MERLIN was selected to assist in the completion of acoustical upgrades to a Calgary facility that tests and calibrates gas turbine engines. PULP AND PAPER FACILITY – RAISING THE CURTAIN ON ANOTHER SOUND SOLUTION

As a recognized leader in noise control solutions, MERLIN was first contacted in 2019 to mitigate noise issues in a Pulp and Paper facility located in the BC Interior. The overall goal was to get below 85 dB or lower as per OHS requirement. Working closely with the owner, MERLIN recommended a phased approach to drive greater efficiencies while tackling tougher frequencies right from the onset. The customized solutions included an Acoustic Enclosure built in 2019 and Curtain Wall erection in 2020. Sliding curtain walls were used to provide ease of access and absorptive panels were mounted to the building wall to reduce reverberation noise throughout. The end result, MERLIN not only met but exceeded expectations creating a more harmonious environment that surpassed OHS requirements.

When it comes to excessive sound, there can be a multitude of issues at a facility that increase the overall noise levels. As a leader in noise control solutions, Merlin looks at the entire picture and is a single source provider in solving these complex challenges. This was the case with a natural gas compressor facility in Eastern Alberta. After reviewing the noise impact assessment, Merlin provided the products and services for all the recommendations including upgraded engine exhaust silencer and combustion air intake silencers as well as upgraded acoustic ventilation system for all three buildings. The end result was significant noise reduction while further driving efficiencies and overall value for our customer’s bottom line – now that’s full service.

Working closely with F45 Training, a leader in health and fitness and recognized for high-intensity and impact training, Merlin was challenged with reducing noise and vibrations generated from their West Springs studio during intense workouts. After successfully implementing a superior sound attenuation in this studio, Merlin was contracted to replicate its custom solution in another F45 studio in Inglewood.

STEPPING IT UP

Merlin was contacted in 2019 by EllisDon to provide an isolated floor system for the Hines 500 project. Hines 500 is a High-Rise apartment building located downtown Calgary AB.

Merlin assisted EllisDon with the installation of the floor on the 33rd floor of the building. The floor was intended to reduce noise and vibration from the mechanical room to the apartments below.

Install was completed in one day, keeping to the project schedule and promoting the following response from our client “Thank you MERLIN, you guys make my life easy.”
